Confinement Phobia
November
Mummy's CL was here on Nov 4th (Sun). After going thru the stuff that they have in the kitchen, Auntie started giving a list of items she will required for the confinement. Daddy then proceed to buy with Popo. However, after 2 trips and not being able to get exactly wat she wanted, they decided to bring her along for the next trip. It was a busy Sun in the kitchen being filled pots, alcohols, herbs etc. From the first impression, Auntie seemed very experienced telling us on the dos and don'ts. There are so many restrictions and rules to follow...
Diet - All the food are specially prepared by her with lotsa of alcohol and ginger and there are no fruits and vegs at all for fear that I will have diarrhoea, making Mummy feel so constipated. For the whole month, mummy has been eating nothing but pork, chicken and fish. Night time, there will be tonics to strengthen her body. Also, no plain water allowed and mummy needs to minimise the contact with water. In replacement, there is a special red date drink and use of water boiled with rice wine for washing hands, face etc. Drinking is also not allowed while standing.
Bath - Mummy has to bath in special water boiled with herbs so as to expel wind. Washing of hair is not allowed until Day 14 and Day 30. For me, in the first 2 weeks, the bath is taken also in special water boiled with herbs to get rid of jaundice. In the last 2 weeks, the bath is taken with guinness stout so that I will be strong. On the day of the full month, both of us bath in water with pomelo leaves. After that, we can bath normally..
It is really tough during the mummy's confinement as she has to follow Auntie's rules and auntie is unhappy when they dun listen. They tried to tell auntie nicely of the things that they dun like example, feeding me when I'm lying down as I may get choke etc.. and auntie will not be pleased. "Threatening" them that she will leave in the first week since they are hard to get along with. She also insist that mummy and daddy do not carry me when I cried as they may spoil me and always comparing mummy to another mom whom she helped to do confinement for. Oh no... We are different individuals with different ways of doing things. She cannot simply imposed her way on us. Can't we just compromised? She is so overbearing and sensitive. Mummy must also use her brand of diaper cream, diapers or milk powder. Forever using her experience to rebutt them.
She will have an excuse for everything.
Rashes - When i have milk rashes and lotsa of mucus in the eye for the first week, it is because of the "heaty" milk powder they feed me. Being the inexperience FTM, mummy changed the milk powder and only to be chided by the PD as the milk rashes are due to dirty mittens and the mucus in the eyes are due to blocked tear ducts. FYI, the rashes came back in the 3rd week which auntie now conveniently blamed it on the mummy for eating durian during pregnancy. Hello, if it is really due to the durians, it will appear during birth and not wait till 3 weeks later... Haiz.. Mummy diligently apply the medicated cream on my rashes which subsided and Auntie can proudly declared that the rashes subsided because she use her fingers to prick on those "white heads". Argh... For my heat rashes, auntoe cover my neck with a towel that is sometimes drenched with my milk/water. Making my rashes worse than ever. At times, they even see the towel covering my face when my active hands accidentally flipped the towel over.
Cries - If Auntie is taking care of me when I happen to cry, it will be because i'm not filling though my feeding time is not up and she will feed me. If it happen to mummy and daddy, they will have to wait for my feeding time and bear with my crying meanwhile. If I'm not sleeping, auntie will feed me till i sleep. Seemed as if babies cannot have wakening hours and must always sleep. Auntie always commenting that EBM is not filling and have to feed me again with FM, overfeeding me and upset the feeding time. Resulting me to "er ni"... If I cannot finished my milk, she sometimes cover the milk with the wet towel meant to clean my bottom over the teat. Excuse me, there is a cover for the milk bottle. Why do you still need to use the wet towel?
Auntie is coughing throughout the whole confinement, and not sure if it is due to her cough that I'm down with stuffy nose filled with phlegm and mucus though I did not sleep in aircon room. It din get better until 3 weeks later. Even till now, mummy can see the mucus in my nose.
Overall, no doubt auntie has the experience but times have changed. Some traditional mtd may work but there are also better ways which she cannot accept. If only she can listen to mummy instead of insisting on her ways, confinement will be easier for all of us...
with love,
